This Small Business Saturday Be The Small Business

You know the feeling. The Saturday after Thanksgiving, you skip the big-box chaos and walk into the little shop on the corner instead. The owner knows your name. The candles smell like the season. You leave with a gift for your sister and a good feeling that your money stayed close to home.

That’s Small Business Saturday. And for a lot of Americans, it’s one of the best days of the holiday season.

This year, it falls on Saturday, November 28. You’ll probably shop small again, and you should. But here’s a thought to carry with you while you do:

Every one of those shops started with one person who decided to try.

What if this year, you were that person? Not with a lease on Main Street or a big loan, but with your own online store, and a way to start on Amazon too. This Small Business Saturday, you don’t just have to support the small business. You can be the small business.

Why Small Business Saturday means so much

meaning

Small Business Saturday started in 2010, when American Express created a day to celebrate the shops that make a neighborhood feel like home. This year marks the 17th one.

People take it to heart. In American Express’s 2025 Shop Small Impact Study, 86% of consumers said they were likely to shop small during the holiday season, in person or online.

Why? Because small businesses feel personal. There’s a real person behind the counter, or behind the website. Someone who picked every product, answers every message and actually cares if you like what you bought.

That personal touch is something anyone can offer. You don’t need decades of experience. You need to care about the people you’re selling to, and a place to start.

Small business looks different now

looks different

When you picture a small business, you probably see a storefront with a bell over the door. Those are wonderful. But they’re only part of the picture.

Plenty of them don’t have a sign out front. They’re run from kitchen tables, spare bedrooms and phones, in between school pickups and day jobs.

Today, a small business can be:

  • An online store with a name and a style that’s all yours
  • A shop on a big marketplace like Amazon, where shoppers are already looking
  • Both at once, run by one person with a laptop or a phone

The spirit is the same as the shop on the corner: one person, a few well-chosen products, and customers who feel looked after. Only the address has changed. Now it can be a website.

What it takes to be a small business, and what it doesn’t

what it takes

What it takes:

  • Knowing who you’re for. Dog owners, new parents, home cooks, weekend travelers. Small businesses win by knowing their people.
  • A personal touch. A name you like, a short story about why you started, and a friendly way of talking to customers.
  • Showing up. Posting, promoting, answering questions, trying new things. A little every week.
  • Patience. Small businesses grow step by step. Nobody opens on Saturday and retires on Sunday.

What it doesn’t take anymore:

  • A lease, a storefront or a sign out front
  • A designer to build your website from scratch
  • Weeks of hunting for products
  • Tech skills or business experience

With a ready store, the second list is already handled. You get to focus on the first one, which is the part that makes a small business special anyway.

Your countdown to November 28

countdown

You don’t need months. Start a week or two before Small Business Saturday, and you’ll walk into the weekend as a small business owner.

  1. Pick your people. Finish this sentence: “My store is for ___ who ___.” For example, “dog owners who take their pup everywhere” or “home cooks tired of the same five dinners.” Pick the people you understand best.
  2. Start your 14-day free trial. Sign up, answer a short survey about the niche, design and domain name you like, and your store is ready right after. Your access details arrive by email.
  3. Make it feel like yours. Choose a design you like, look through the products already in your store and decide which ones to feature first. Then write two or three honest sentences about who you are and why you started. That’s your “about the owner” story, and small businesses live on it.
  4. Meet your manager. Your personal manager will reach out to help you get started. Ask everything: how the dashboard works, what to feature, how promotion works.
  5. Look at the Amazon side. Open your Amazon Seller Kit and read the beginner’s guide. Learn what selling on Amazon involves, including your own Amazon Seller account and Amazon’s fees. There’s no rush to set it all up before Saturday.
  6. Get your Saturday post ready. A photo of your store on your phone, a few words about why you started it, and an invitation to take a look. More on that below.

How to show up on Small Business Saturday as the business

show up

This is the one day of the year when people actively look for small businesses to support. Here’s how to show up:

  • Tell your people. Post your store on your social media with a short, honest note: “This year I’m not just shopping small. I started a small business of my own. Take a look and tell me what you think.” Friends and family love supporting someone they know.
  • Share your story, not just your products. People shop small because of the person behind it. Say why you picked your products and who they’re for.
  • Use your $40 ad coupon. If you haven’t run your first campaign yet, this weekend is a good time to try, with your manager’s help.
  • Ask for feedback. “What would you click on first?” is a great question. Honest answers are worth more than likes.
  • Still shop small yourself. Visit the shops in your neighborhood. Notice how they greet you, what they put in the window and how they follow up. That’s free business school.

And don’t measure the day by orders. Measure it by what you learned and how many people now know your store exists. That’s how every small business starts.

The truth to keep in mind

truth

Every real small business owner knows the numbers. Here are yours:

  • The first 14 days are free. After that, it’s a paid plan. Your plan is $39/month and renews monthly until you cancel. You can cancel anytime in your account, and you’ll get a reminder email 3 days before your trial ends.
  • Promotion costs money. Your $40 coupon covers your first campaign. After that, you decide how much to spend.
  • Some steps have fees. For example, processing an order comes with a fee. Ask your manager to walk you through it before your first one.
  • Amazon has its own costs. Selling on Amazon needs your own Amazon Seller account. Amazon charges $0.99 per item sold on its Individual plan or $39.99/month on its Professional plan, plus a referral fee on each sale that depends on the category.
  • A busy weekend isn’t a promise. Small Business Saturday is a big day for shopping, but nobody can promise how much a new store will sell. That depends on your products, your promotion and the time you put in.

That’s not the fine print. That’s just how small business works, and it’s better to know it before you start.
